2008 Fall Tournament

Posted by HWTA on October 24, 2008

Way to go HWTA ladies! We raised over $3000 for the Huntsville Achievement School.

What a beautiful weekend for tennis and a successful 10th annual Charity tournament! I must say, it has been an honor serving as your Vice President the last two years. You are all so wonderful and have made it so easy. I am very thankful to have been given the opportunity to work with such a great group. Speaking of an awesome group, we are so honored to have Karen Mitchell as our President. She was instrumental in getting our donations this year, sending thank you cards, and making the tournament run so smoothly. There are not enough words to describe how much she has blessed HWTA. Tell her thank you the next time you see her! Another awesome person that I have had the pleasure to work with the last two years is Arlene Taylor! She gets the job done and does it extremely well! Thanks Arlene for all the excellent door prizes and outstanding food you managed to coordinate! She worked with me through 4 tournaments and each of them surpassed the other with surprising abundance. You can’t say the word “tournament” and not have Irene Wisner in the mix. She is HWTA’s tournament director and has proven that her title is worn well. Irene may not have been there with us during the tournament this year, but did all the leg work and predicting to keep us going throughout the weekend. She has always given many hours to us for our tournaments and put many matches on the courts. Her constant effort and time has made our tournaments run like clock work. Thanks Irene!!

President’s Message

Posted by HWTA on October 24, 2008

Some of you are probably wondering what has possessed me to want to do this job again next year. Am I crazy? Crazy like a fox! This has been the most wonderful year for me. It has given me the chance to meet so many more HWTA members and in so many different roles. What I have learned is that HWTA is full of absolutely astounding ladies with so many different talents and abilities. And all of you are so willing to help when asked. It seems to me that there is no task too big or too difficult for this group. And I feel truly blessed to have been a small part of this organization this year.

As an example, Donna Sellers and Arlene Taylor and their helpers put on a fabulous tournament to benefit the Huntsville Achievement School. The weather was perfect for tennis, the matches went off smoothly, there were loads of door prizes – and Betty Choate won the raffle for the one-year membership to HTC. Congratulations to Betty, all of the tournament players and to Donna and Arlene for a super tournament! Special thanks to Joc Simmons for the one-year membership that we raffled – to raise more money for the kids! And please, if you frequent the businesses listed as sponsors, let them know how much we appreciate their support of the tournament and of the Huntsville Achievement School.

Don’t forget to get your vote to Peggy Newberry for the Most Improved Player and Good Sportsmanship awards. As usual, we have lots of truly deserving nominees this year and Peggy reports that she has already received lots of votes. Don’t miss this opportunity to add your vote for your favorite.

Betty Choate

Posted by HWTA on October 23, 2008

–By Dottie Robinson

HWTA is working toward a record 300 members for 2008, and there is one long-time member who deserves very special recognition. Born Betty Jean Dupuy, Betty Choate, a founding member of HWTA, celebrated her 80th birthday on June 20, 2008. She is married to her high school sweetheart, Earl, a NASA engineer, who moved the family to Huntsville in 1960. They have a daughter, Cathey, and a son, Mark, whose life was taken in 1977 in a rappelling accident at Three Caves. Cathey blessed Betty and Earl with three grandchildren who live in Madison.

Many of us began playing tennis in the Roselyn Donnelly/Brahan Spring era. Prior to Brahan Spring, tennis was played in downtown Huntsville on six Rubico courts in Big Spring Park. In 1966 Betty saw an announcement in the paper for tennis lessons being taught in Big Spring Park. Rose Roberts was the teacher and was also responsible for organizing HWTA in 1967. Dressed in ALL WHITE, the dress code of the era, and carrying her WOODEN tennis racket, Betty began her long love affair with tennis. Betty began playing league tennis in 1983-84 when Michelob was the sponsor, and has continued league play through today. In October, she and her current team participated in the State Super Senior Tournament here in Huntsville. When asked what motivates her to continue playing tennis, Betty said, “I continue to play because I love the game and the people I have met playing tennis. I have met so many people through tennis that I would never have met if I hadn’t played tennis.” Then when asked if she had a secret to good health, she said, “No, I just try to stay active playing tennis and riding my bike”.
